DINESH KHADKA was born in Dang, west Nepal but is living in Maidstone, UK, for the last 17 years. A former Secretary of the Maidstone Nepalese Community, Khadka is pursuing Ph. D. in food technology from the University of Greenwich. He is contesting for the post of Councillor on behalf of the Lib Dem party, is busy in canvassing but found sometime to speak with us. Excerpts of an interview:

When did you join the Lib Dems and why not other big parties?

I officially joined the party back in 2010. However, I've been actively involved with the  local  Lib Dem functions and campaigns since late 2008. When I was working as a Public Relations Officer, Maidstone Nepalese Community, in 2006, I was eagerly endeavouring to engage and build our relations with major political parties. Amongst them Lib Dem came across to me and they were very helpful to us (the Nepalese community). We had nearly a dozen Lib Dem leaders supporting us which eventually made me to incline toward the Liberal Democrats and later I understood a bit more about liberal values and their commitment towards communities.

Coming all the way from Nepal, how do you feel taking part in local politics in the UK?

Right from the beginning of my adulthood I always followed my parents' social work and selflessness. Most importantly helping those needy people was more valuable than any other you could compare. These deep-rooted elements always encouraged me to go above and beyond, hence I was able to join the mainstream. It is very challenging to understand local issues, to integrate with locals and also proactively seek to resolve these issues.

The Tory govt has been implementing austerity measures affecting the local communities. How have local services been affected in the Borough of Maidstone?

The Tory government’s very aggressive austerity measures have significantly impacted local Boroughs and communities. A major example is Universal Credit which has made thousands of people homeless. It is needless to say that Lib Dems fought to implement free school meal for all primary school kids which has now been taken away by the Tory government. This has again impacted thousands of kids who have not been able to consume hot meals at the Schools.

What are you campaigning for? What issues are you raising in the election?

 I am mainly focusing on:

- to be at the heart of the community and be a voice for the residents of my ward I am going to represent (High             Street Ward of Maidstone Borough).

- to continue to work tirelessly, working as part of the Maidstone team, to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

- to fight for better community facilities including protecting and enhancing our precious green spaces and place         area.

- to continue to challenge long-term neglect of our roads and footways,

- to keep our Ward clean and free from litter and fly- tipping.

What would you like to tell your voters?

I have lived in Maidstone Borough for more than 17 years and have witnessed local issues very closely such as air pollution, littering, condition of roads and drains, parking & transport and need to improve our local parks and open spaces. I have been working with the local Lib Dem Councillors for nearly 10 years. Moreover, I campaigned for some local issues and was able to take it to the relevant level such as Hayle Road Crossing petition, Melville Road waste management, promotion of Collis Green Field and organising various local community events.

If elected, I will be replacing Fran Wilson who has been a long-standing Lib Dem Councillor in High Street Ward, she has also been the leader of the Council. Therefore, it is not going to be easy to replace her. However, I am very excited to understand local issues more deeply and will do my best to address them.
